Acrylic paint and photographs. This piece is inspired by a news article that I read a few months ago about Libya taking land from Malian farmers in order to grow export crops. It’s a multi-media piece; acrylic paint with photos of both the insect caterpillars and the machine caterpillars closing in on the farmer who is looking away from the land that has sustained him and his family for generations and toward the city, where his only hopes–however slim–lie.
Since Qaddafi is no longer with us I’m not sure where Libya is with plans to usurp Malian land. The article as well as a link to another article in which Hillary Clinton says that there is a new scramble for Africa can be found in my June 11, 2011 post.
